Chair Yoga for 50+

Saturday, 2/18/12, 1:30-3:00p, $20

Chair Yoga is for everyone. No matter what age you are or what condition you are in you can experience the health benefits of yoga. It adapts traditional yoga poses so that they can be done with a chair for support, making yoga more accessible for people who cannot stand for long periods, lack the mobility to move easily from standing to seated to supine positions, or are simply looking for a more gentle practice. Office workers can also take advantage of chair yoga's adaptations to sneak in some stretches at work.

 

You can perform most yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and relaxation techniques from a chair. In addition to a good stretch, chair yoga participants can also enjoy other health benefits of yoga, including improved muscle tone and range of motion, better breathing habits, reduction of stress, better sleep, and a sense of well-being.

Stress Less

Life can be demanding and stressful. If not handled properly, stress can easily lead to a variety of health and emotional problems including insomnia, anxiety, digestion problems, weakened immune system, etc. In this stress reducing workshop you will learn:

  • What stress type you are
  • How to reduce and deal with stress
  • How to create a calm and peaceful environment
  • How to create a stress-free lifestyle
  • Gentle asana (posture) practice
  • Meditation for stress
  • Relaxation
  • techniques

 

Home Practice

TBA, 2:00 - 3:30p, $30 

Perhaps you take one or two classes a week and love the benefits, but know that a more regular home practice is necessary to truly transform your body and your life.  A home yoga practice is valuable not only because it can bring you the cumulative benefit of a daily practice, but by taking control of your own practice, you'll gain a deeper understanding of yoga poses and their specific effect on your body, as well as a deeper, more personal meditative experience.  Yet many beginning yogis struggle with either the motivation needed to get on their mats and practice without a teacher, or the knowledge of how to choose and sequence asanas (poses) according to their effects on the body.

This workshop aims to provide you with all the tools you need to build a home practice:

  • an overview of the types of asanas and their effects
  • guidelines on sequencing your personal practice
  • customizing your practice for your own body & its needs
  • your space - home, office, hotel, or outdoors and its effects
  • you will be given special handouts that will support different types of home practice including set sequences and mini set sequences that are color coded for easier picking within the categories, i.e., standing, seated, lying, back bends, etc.

The discussion will be interactive and will prompt students to try out the asanas we discuss and create their own short flows in class.

All levels of yogis are welcome - whether you're looking to begin a home practice, or deepen one that you already have.  However, we do ask that you be familiar with basic yoga poses, and have taken at least a couple yoga classes. __________________________________________________________________

 

All workshops are for all levels and are from 2:00p - 3:30p on Saturdays, $30 paid in advance or $40 on the day of unless specifically stated. Please be sure to register early; there needs to be a minimum of 5 people signed up before the workshop day.
