September's Yogi of the Month: Jonathan Gruver
A couple of years ago, I was having problems with my neck and shoulders tightening up, probably as a result of almost twenty years spent hunched over a desk, computer, steering wheel, etc. I began working out with a personal trainer and she suggested I try yoga to improve my flexibility. I no longer work out with a trainer, but I am still doing yoga because I can see and feel the benefits.
I like yoga for several reasons. First, as someone who gets easily bored, I like the different types of yoga, the different levels of classes and the constant variety of routines in each class. I never feel like I am watching a rerun as I am continually challenged to learn something new. I also like that I get a good overall workout in yoga without feeling sore the next day. That allows me to work out more frequently and I enjoy it more. Third, I like the fact that yoga is a low-impact form of exercise. I gave up jogging years ago because of a bad knee, so it was great to find a form of exercise that doesn’t pound on my joints.
Yoga has benefited me in many ways too. Not only has it increased my flexibility, but it has also improved my balance, strength and stamina. In addition, it has been a great way to relieve stress and has even helped me to lose a few pounds. Finally, practicing yoga has caused me to be much more aware of my body in everyday life – my posture, my diet and my breathing have all improved as a result.
I have several favorite poses in yoga (like I said, I like variety) and a couple I am not as fond of (the aptly named “Fierce Chair” comes to mind). One of my favorites though is Extended Child because I get a good stretch in my hips and my shoulders at the same time. I intend to continue practicing yoga for many years and, although I know I will never be able to do “Down Dog” as well as my English Setter Abbey, I am hoping to eventually learn to love “Fierce Chair.”
