August's Yogini of the Month: Jo Dieterich

For years, I have been attempting to stay fit, but it has often been just that, an attempt. Yoga has sounded interesting to me for a while. I bought a book and I bought a tape, but I was unsure I was doing the poses right and unsure of just how to go about establishing a practice for myself. In November of 2003, I came to the realization that if I was going to stay healthy and fit and age gracefully, now was the time to start. I attended my first Yoga class. I came out of that first class hooked. But, with very little time to actually pursue classes. Then in January 2004, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Now that will put your world in a spin!! I practiced as much as I could given work schedules (yes, I worked all through treatment) and lapses in energy. I made it through all the yuck stuff and came out of treatment stonger, both physically and emotionally, than when I started. My timing with beginning Yoga was good as during Yoga classes I could take my mind o! ff everything else that was going and focus on something new. I am excited to say that all of that is behind me and I am still practicing Yoga nearly daily. Yoga provides a stress release second to none and I find that the breathing techniques I have learned can be practiced any where, any time to help bring me back to center.

My favorite pose is side chair. It works the legs, the abs and gives a good stretch to the back. Plus it massages internal organs to help keep systems in the abdominal cavity in good working order.

I see Yoga as a practice and exercise especially suited to the maturing baby boomers. When I started looking into the various styles, I found there is something for everyone. I am very glad to have happened upon Jessica as she teaches many styles and teaches her students to vary their personal practices. I plan to continue Yoga for a very long time and keep that dowagers hump and other signs of aging off my list of concerns.
