January's Yogi of the Month: Gary Saunders
I discovered yoga at the age of 53. I was looking for a form of exercise which would challenge me, improve me, help me, and excite me enough so that I would stick with it. Yoga is all of that and more.
I had been through a period of life where I was experiencing intense shoulder and hand pain. I had considered surgery. In fact, I had already been through 5 injections into my shoulders which were considered so invasive that they were billed and called surgery. My doctor had specifically told me to stay away from free weights and weight machines. Yet that was all the so called “trainers” seemed to know.
Then I found yoga. A friend mentioned it to me. I found a club close to where I live which offered classes. It was one simple suggestion which caused the love affair between yoga and I to begin. My friend suggested that immediately after a yoga class I sit still in my car for a few moments and see how my body felt. I did. I was astonished at how GOOD I FELT.
Today the hand and shoulder pain have been gone for 2 years. I am more flexible and feel better physically that I have felt in along time. I will not say that I enjoy everything we do in class because it is often challenging for me. Yet, when I get my moments right after class, the feeling is still there, every time.
I can see and feel the improvements in my body’s flexibility and strength. I see people much younger than I come to class and wish that I was a flexible as they are as they begin yoga. Yet I see other people in my everyday life who are younger in years than I am and do not have my flexibility. I recently had the great pleasure of walking up behind my wife at a party and hear her bragging about what I can do in yoga class.
By the way, the friend who started me is in his 60’s and still doing yoga. I have now been doing yoga for just over 2 years. Never have I stuck with any other kind of work out for so long. I highly recommend it to everyone one who will listen to me. Yoga has significantly helped me physically. I just had my annual physical a week ago, my Doctor wanted to know, “What the heck I had been doing.” Yoga has improved me, still challenges me, and yes, I am definitely very excited about yoga!
