•Quote from a Student•

Now I know why NIA is all the rage on the Dallas fitness scene! NIA has really helped me add balance to my life. The balance has come in the form of helping me feel more feminine, a side of me that I find to be very positively powerful in a kind sort of way. The non-judgmental “performance-type environment” (rather than a judgmental-do-it-exactly-like-this environment) has inherently allowed me to release and express my feminine energy. At the same time, NIA offers an aerobic level of exercise that is helping to improve my fitness level as well! Even better, it’s so fun that I’m always eager for the next class day to arrive! - Kelly Chastin

Student of the Month

August Student of the Month:

Brett and Sheree Walker

My name is Sheree and my husband is Brett Walker. We are both honored and blessed to be chosen as Student of the Month. We tried yoga in California, but couldn't make it consistent and had a hard time finding an instructor that we liked. I have been exercising for so many years, always staying active with Volleyball and going to gyms. When we moved to Texas a year ago for my job as an Engineer, I went online and found Body Synergie through a simple Google.com search and started coming to the Beginners class. Within a few months of attending, I noticed definition in my arms and changes in my physical body I had never seen before in all the years of working out (the soreness was the same though!). Besides being an Engineer I also am a healer and have been for many years, clearing energy for peoples homes and their bodies.

Brett had some unexpected benefits including weight loss - Jessica's power classes are strenuous and rewarding- and flexibility! "I can tie my shoes without sitting or squatting and I can back out of the driveway with the greatest of ease. I never knew how much it bothered me that I couldn't. Most beneficial to me though are the improvements in mental and emotional well-being. Self acceptance is a fundamental part of yoga, and I appreciate the ways those principles in class can be applied to other areas of my life. Rising tide lifts all boats!"

My husband and I started going to class everyday and we love the bonding and grounding it gives our relationship. We cheer each other on and sometimes even practice together at home. In class, holding hands during shavasana, corpse pose, helps us feel that much closer.

Brett and I have started taking better care of ourselves with our diet, routines and habits. This past week in class I was able to finally achieve and hold a pose I had not been able to before. The great feeling of accomplishment, sense of peace, strength, and flexibility is what continues my drive and love for Yoga. So much in fact, Jessica will be training me this next year to become an instructor myself. I would also like to thank my fellow Yogis, who have become such an inspiration to me daily, for not laughing at me (but with me) if I lose balance.

March Student of the Month:

Marie Mittasch

My name is Marie Mittasch and I am honored to be chosen as student of the month. I live in Rockwall and I work in uptown Dallas as a legal
assistant for a large law firm.

I joined Body Synergie in May 2006 at the recommendation of my rheumatologist. I was off work on medical leave at the time. He recommended I take tai chi classes because he thought the slow fluid movements would help the debilitating joint, muscle and tendon pains I was experiencing from lupus and fibromyalgia. It had gotten so bad that I was having shooting pains and numbness in my legs, feet and arms, I was struggling to walk, and I was getting maybe three or four hours of sleep a night. I was also struggling to get out of bed in the morning because of pain and I was so fatigued during the day that I would literally fall asleep sitting up. Having lupus and fibromyalgia was slowly but surely taking over my life; something I was determined I was not going to let it do.

One day while looking through a local magazine, I saw an ad for Body Synergie, which happened to be a mile and a half down the road from my house, so I thought what do I have to lose. I went to my first tai chi class on Thursday evening with Jonathan. I liked the class and Jonathan is a very patient instructor, but I felt really awkward and I had trouble relaxing. I did, however, notice a slight reduction in pain. After a couple of months, I still wasn?t getting the pain relief I was expecting, so I decided to give restorative yoga a try. I instantly loved it and knew it was just what I needed. I saw greater pain relief from the intense stretching. I continued taking these classes twice a week with Jessica and Jonathan for approximately six months.

Then one day I was talking to Jessica about the pain in my neck and shoulders not going away, and she recommended that I try beginning yoga
along with restorative yoga. She thought I would get some additional benefits from beginning yoga because it would help strengthen the muscles in my neck and shoulders, thereby reducing pain. I had been taking both classes for only a couple of weeks when the restorative yoga classes were temporarily discontinued. This forced me to take beginning yoga only and I started going two to three times a week and Saturday mornings whenever possible. I really struggled the first couple of weeks, especially with the strength exercises, but to my surprise, I noticed that my neck and shoulder pain had decreased significantly. I'm still struggling some with the strength and core exercises and I know it will take more time, but I noticed that my balance, stamina andflexibility have increased. I am also sleeping better, feel less stressed, and I am losing weight and inches (something I have been trying to do for quite some time without any success). After only 6 weeks of beginning yoga, I feel like a different person. The people I work with, and family and friends, have also noticed the difference and some of them are actually talking about taking yoga classes. Before yoga, pain controlled my life; now I'm in control of my life. I am virtually pain-free and I have the energy and strength to do whatever I want to do. It took some time to decide which form of yoga was right for me, but now I know that yoga will definitely be a part of my life forever. My next challenge is to try the Vinyasa class. Thank you, Body Synergie, you changed my life!

November Student of the Month:

Jim Ferrell

Hi, My name is Jim Ferrell and it is an honor to be chosen as student of the month. Up to a few months ago I would have never dreamed I would make a statement like that about yoga.

For the last few years I have been trying to get into an exercise routine, but with no luck. At the suggestion of my wife, I finally tried yoga (it took a few weeks to make it to the studio). I went to the evening beginners class for the first time and during the class I decided to go ahead and sign up for twelve classes. In the process, I have come to fully enjoy yoga. The things I enjoy about yoga: the non- competitiveness and the discipline it teaches you about yourself. I was nervous the first time, but soon came to realize everybody stays within their mats.

Since I have started practicing yoga, I have seen multiple benefits. I'm taking better care of myself. I'm sleeping better, feel less stressed out, and eating better. I just feel better, overall. My wife says I'm in a good mood much of the time (more than usual, I guess).

Every week I have something new within myself to look forward to. From what I have learned so far, yoga is constantly a challenge as your flexibility, strength and concentration increase you can go deeper into poses and have the ability to reach new poses that were out of your reach.

I'm glad I came to Body Synergie. The studio, instructors and fellow students all make it a truly refreshing experience. I really enjoy the way it's taught by Jessica and Mitzi; they seem to tailor the class for each individual level and always offer bits of encouragement. And you have to love Jessica's sense of humor.

I want to thank everybody at Body Synergie for making my learning of yoga a truly pleasant and rewarding experience.

October Student of the Month:

Lori Pitchforth

I am Lori Pitchforth, owner of "Your Pet Rules!" pet sitting for Rockwall County. My husband Don and I have been married for 30 years. We have 3 grown sons and 5 grandchildren.

I first came to be interested in yoga as a young girl going to the library. I checked out a book with yoga poses in it. I remember doing the poses in the living room of the house that I grew up in.

Through the years I tried aerobics, walking, hiking, biking, and working ou at the gym in Rockwall. My husband and I would take a yoga class to give us variety in our workout. Enjoying the yoga class rekindled the spark that I felt when I was young.

In one of the local magazines, I came across the advertisement for Body Synergie and saved it. I put it on my desk and like most people lost it in the clutter. In January of this year I was talking to a good friend, Cyndy Perltiz. She told me of a wonderful yoga studio. She explained the different classes available and then invited me to join her the next morning. I did and I was hooked! Thank you Cyndy!

Since I made the commitment to take three to four classes a week, I have noticed the following: I can handle stress better, bette weight management, sinus problems are gone, I have increased flexibility and more energy.

In the beginning, the Restorative class was the most challenging. Having to hold the poses and relax at the same time would make me feel uncomfortable. Now it's easier to relax into the poses. Sun Salutations invigorates me and leads into my favorite pose, downward facing dog. With yoga I feel more confident and physically stronger.

I am grateful for the relaxed atmosphere of the studio and the people I have met there. Jessica makes class personal and comfortable for each student that walks through the door. For that I thank her!!

Many blessings for the success of Body Synergie!
